When a Donation Becomes More Than an Object: HELLO Trust at Crossroads Foundation

On September 19, the HELLO Trust Hong Kong team returned to Crossroads Foundation’s Hong Kong Distribution Department to volunteer and help sort and organise donated goods.
The Distribution Department is where volunteers help process donations arriving from different places, preparing them to reach individuals and communities who need them. For our team, the experience offered a practical way to contribute while learning more
about the people behind the donations we were handling.
Understanding the Impact Behind Every Donation
During the session, the Crossroads team shared two stories that gave us a different perspective on the work in front of us.
The first was about a mother raising a neurodivergent child. For a family facing financial difficulties, even something as simple as a box of playdough can become difficult to afford. Through Crossroads, the family was able to receive what the child needed.
The second story was about a student who could not afford a laptop for his future studies. Ten years ago, Crossroads provided him with one. With that laptop, he went on to complete his bachelor’s degree and is now pursuing his master’s degree. He now hopes to support his own family in the same way.
These stories reminded us that the value of a donation is not necessarily reflected by the size or cost of the object itself.
A box waiting to be sorted is not simply a box. A laptop is not simply a laptop. An everyday item can become a tool for learning, a source of support, or an opportunity that changes the direction of someone's future.
Learning Through Service
For our team, the visit was also a reminder of why community service matters.
Volunteering does not always involve large-scale projects or visible outcomes. Sometimes, it means spending a few hours sorting donations so that the right resources can reach the right people.
These experiences allow young people to better understand the needs that exist within their communities and to see how different organisations contribute to addressing them. They also demonstrate that meaningful social impact can begin with relatively small actions.
We are grateful to the Crossroads Foundation team for welcoming HELLO Trust again and for sharing these stories with us. We look forward to continuing to learn, volunteer, and contribute to our community through future opportunities.
Every donation has a story. Sometimes, we simply need to look beyond the object to understand it.
