Date: June 7, 2026
Location: 小禾的家 (Xiaohe's Home), Rural Guangzhou, China
On June 7, 2026, HELLO Trust Guangzhou visited 小禾的家 (Xiaohe's Home) , a community space dedicated to supporting children and families in a rural area outside Guangzhou. The team delivered an engaging, animal-themed English learning session for 41 local children, supported by 11 dedicated volunteers.
The event reflected HELLO Trust's ongoing commitment to serving underprivileged communities while empowering youth leaders to design and lead impactful educational initiatives.
Event Overview
The 90-minute session was structured into three parts: icebreaker, vocabulary teaching, and game-based reinforcement. Rather than relying on textbooks, the team used play, movement, and teamwork to introduce English animal vocabulary and build children's confidence in speaking.
By the numbers:
41 children from the local rural community
11 HELLO Trust volunteers
30+ animal vocabulary words introduced
7+ interactive games
90 minutes of active learning and play
Prizes including chocolate, blind box pens, and lollipops were awarded throughout the afternoon, adding excitement and motivation.
Activities
Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Children gathered in small groups to introduce themselves, followed by a round of Rock-Paper-Scissors in which losing participants followed the winner, eventually forming one long "champion train." The activity helped ease nerves and build group cohesion.
Vocabulary Teaching (20 minutes)
Led by Feifei Li, the teaching segment introduced over 30 animal names using visual aids and repetition. Each of the 11 volunteers was assigned to a small group, ensuring personalized attention and support.
Games (60 minutes)
The remainder of the session featured multiple interactive games designed to reinforce vocabulary while encouraging teamwork and friendly competition.
Game | Description |
Whisper Challenge | Children passed a word or name around the circle; accuracy earned points. |
Picture Guessing | Groups competed to identify animal images first; correct answers earned points. |
Animal Riddles | Teams solved printed riddles; fastest correct answers won points. |
Guess the Word | One child guessed an animal while teammates described it in Chinese without using certain keywords. |
Right or Wrong | The room split into two sides, each representing an animal; hints described one animal, and children moved to their chosen side. Incorrect guesses sat down until one winner remained. |
Tic-Tac-Toe | Two teams competed to name animal pictures first; winners placed their mark on a large game board, aiming to connect four in a row. |
Rumble in the Jungle | Children sat in a circle, each assigned an animal role. The person in the middle called out an animal name; those animals had to switch seats while avoiding being caught. When "Rumble in the Jungle" was called, everyone had to move. A spinning wheel determined the final winner. |
The games were designed to be inclusive, energetic, and educational - with children laughing, running, and eagerly raising their hands throughout the afternoon.
Leadership and Volunteers
The event was organized by HELLO Trust Guangzhou's leadership team, including Co-Regional Managers Feifei Li and Charlene Wang. Volunteers such as Thea played key roles in running specific games, including "Rumble in the Jungle."
Every volunteer was assigned to a small group of children, ensuring that each participant received individualized attention and encouragement.
Community Impact
HELLO Trust Guangzhou was established in March 2026. This event at 小禾的家 marked another significant step in the branch's mission to serve underprivileged children and expand access to educational opportunities in rural areas surrounding Guangzhou.
By combining English learning with play-based activities, the team demonstrated that education can be both effective and joyful. The children left not only with new vocabulary but also with increased confidence and a positive association with learning English.
Looking Ahead
HELLO Trust Guangzhou plans to continue partnering with community spaces like 小禾的家 to deliver regular educational and creative programming. Future initiatives may include additional English sessions, environmental awareness workshops, and arts-based activities - all led by youth volunteers and designed to create meaningful, measurable impact.
