From handwritten cards to conversations in Taiwanese, HELLO Trust Tainan brought young people and elderly community members together through a simple act of kindness.

Sometimes, meaningful connections begin with a simple hello.

Recently, HELLO Trust Tainan organised a community outreach activity at Tainan Park, bringing high school students and elderly community members together through conversations, handwritten cards, and shared experiences.

Before the event, members invited high school students from four schools to create handwritten cards filled with warm wishes for the elderly. On the day, the team headed to Tainan Park, where members split into small groups to approach elderly people resting and socialising in the park. Using question cards to break the ice, they started conversations, listened to personal stories, and presented the handwritten cards as a small gesture of appreciation. They also invited the elderly participants to share their life experiences and advice for the younger generation.

Starting with Everyday Conversations

The team first met several elderly people sitting on a bench and chatting. Through conversations about their children's careers and their grandchildren's studies, members gained a glimpse into their family lives and the care they continued to show for their loved ones.

These everyday stories offered a reminder that meaningful engagement does not always require elaborate activities. Sometimes, taking the time to ask questions and listen is enough to help people feel seen and valued.

The team later visited a pavilion where several elderly residents had gathered to drink tea and chat. They expressed their appreciation for the young people's initiative to reach out to the elderly, encouraging the team to continue its efforts.

Finding Common Ground Through Taiwanese

One particularly memorable part of the activity was the opportunity to communicate in Taiwanese.

With fewer young people using the language in everyday life, the team had initially wondered whether language differences might make it difficult to connect with the elderly participants. Instead, speaking Taiwanese and using familiar proverbs helped spark unexpected moments of recognition and shared understanding.

The experience showed how language can do more than facilitate conversation. It can also connect generations through shared cultural experiences, memories, and expressions that might otherwise be overlooked.

When the Cards Ran Out, the Conversations Continued

As the visits progressed, the team gradually ran out of the handwritten cards prepared before the event. Rather than ending the activity there, members began drawing and writing additional cards at nearby benches and stone tables so that more elderly people could receive their greetings.

Later, they encountered a group of elderly residents playing badminton in the park. The group warmly shared fruit and cake with the students, who reciprocated by offering biscuits and handwritten cards.

The interaction soon turned into something more spontaneous. The elderly residents invited the students to join them for badminton and welcomed them to return in their free time to play together.

What began as a planned community visit had become an opportunity for genuine friendship, with an invitation to meet again beyond the event itself.

Small Gestures, Lasting Connections

Through this activity, HELLO Trust Tainan did more than deliver handwritten cards. Members learned about the lives, experiences, and interests of the elderly people they met, from family updates and Taiwanese proverbs to a shared enthusiasm for badminton.

The experience also challenged the assumption that different generations are naturally distant from one another. Meaningful connections can develop when people are willing to take the first step, listen with sincerity, and remain open to learning from one another.

At HELLO Trust, we believe community service is not only about what we give, but also about the relationships we build along the way. By creating opportunities for young people to engage with their communities, we hope to foster greater understanding, respect, and connection across generations.

Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation to turn strangers into friends.
